A longtime Pullman resident passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Avalon Care Center in Pullman, WA. Vernelle was born April 30, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, NE to Ewald and Louise (Michel) Meusborn. Vernelle grew up in Nebraska, graduating from Cedar Rapids High School in 1942. She attended Kearney State Teachers College in Nebraska for a summer prior to transferring to Midland Lutheran College where she received her Bachelor's degree in 1946. Vernelle earned her Masters degree in 1951 from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, CO and also attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln during the summers of 1953 and 1954. Vernelle began her teaching career at the age of 18, teaching in a one room school house near her home town. She went on to teach at Sloan High School in Sloan IA; Wayne High School in Wayne, NE; Blue Island High School in Blue Island, Illinois; Norfolk, Nebraska Junior College as well as high school and junior college in Fort Dodge, Iowa. In 1954, Vernelle came to Pullman, WA to teach at the Washington State University School of Business. Vernelle married Lee Frank Koberstein in 1961 and had one son, Stephen in 1963. She has made Pullman her home since that time. She retired from teaching full time in 1964 and became a homemaker. Vernelle enjoyed collecting and researching antiques and refinishing antique furniture. She especially enjoyed hunting for and finding bargains. Vernelle loved going to Clint's Auctions with her husband Frank where they always received their own buyer's number. She is survived by her son Stephen Koberstein of Pullman; her brother Roger Meusborn and wife Edna; her brother-in-law Paul Olson and all of her nieces and nephews. Vernelle was preceded in death by her husband Lee Frank Koberstein in 2007, her sister Wilma Olson and a brother M. Michel "Mike" Meusborn. A private family graveside service will be held at the IOOF Cemetery in Pullman, WA.
