BALDWIN, Mary Elizabeth (Tarter) Mary reunited with her beloved husband Robert and eldest daughter Barbara on April 18, 2014. Born May 4, 1922 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she grew up in southern California. She graduated from UCLA in nursing and joined the US Navy during WWII. While stationed in Seattle, she was introduced to a young Marine officer recovering from wounds received in the South Pacific. It was love at first sight for Bob, but the fiercely independent Mary needed a little more convincing. They were married six months later in October 1944. Stationed at numerous bases during Bob's career in the Marine Corps, Mary continued to work as a volunteer social worker for Navy Relief, while raising three kids. In 1968 Bob retired and the family returned to his home town of Spokane. A lifetime member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, Mary helped run the Marine Toys For Tots program for many years. Mary and Bob loved to travel in their motorhome and attend the annual USMC Raider reunions. After Bob passed away in 2000 she continued to travel, across the country, through Ireland and China (twice). A loving mother and grandmother and devoted great-grandmother she will be greatly missed by her son, Robert Baldwin; son-in-law, Kent Johnson; granddaughters, Katherine Marie Johnson and Mary Elizabeth Johnson; daughter, Linda Stowe; and grandson, Jeremy Stowe and his wife Karlina; and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Hayden, Elisabeth, and Genevieve. At her request there will be a private interment next to Bob at the Iwo Jima memorial at Fairmount Park. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Spokane Valley Hospital for the compassion and care they gave her. Memorial gifts in her name can be can be made to the Union Gospel Mission, Hospice of Spokane, and Spokane Public Radio.
