SMITTLE, Carl E. 62, of Springfield, died Sunday evening in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Springfield on February 26, 1950, the son of the late Carl Cecil and Juanita (Riley) Smittle. Carl was a 1968 graduate of Northeastern High School. He retired from IBM in 1994 following 25 years of service as a customer engineer. He attended Northridge United Methodist Church and was a member of the Union Club. He enjoyed playing cards, never met a stranger and was loved by many. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rebecca J. "Becky" (Barnhart) Smittle; daughter, Amy J. Smittle of Springfield; son, Brian C. (Suzanne) Smittle of San Diego, California; and grandchildren, Marissa, Caleb, Aiden, and Koen. Also surviving is a sister, Cathy Clark (Charles Potts) of Springfield; brother, Gary (Linda) Smittle of Groveport, Ohio; mother-in-law, June Barnhart of Springfield; sister-in-law, Rita Butcher of Springfield; brothers-in-law, Phil (Sheila) Barnhart of Kohler, Wisconsin, Kent (Sally) Maynard of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Carl's funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Pastor Ken Woode officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
