News Death Notice

RITZENTHALER, Donald Harry age 92, of Fairborn, Ohio passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Emeritus at Fox Run in the care of Crossroads Hospice. He was born in Sandusky, OH on May 18, 1921 to the late Rolland and Helen (Grulich) Ritzenthaler. A long-time resident of Oregon, Ohio, he also wintered in Punta Gorda, FL. Don retired in 1983 as superintendent of the Sun Oil Company in Toledo after 42 years of service, serving as president of the Sun Emblem Club, Vice Chairman of the Sun Retirees Club and member of the National Management Association. As a soldier in the U.S. Army 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division during WWII, he honorably served his country and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Formerly an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Toledo, OH, Don served as president of the congregation, adult Sunday School teacher and chair of the 75th and 100th church anniversary committees. He was also an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Punta Gorda, FL and a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Enon, OH since 2010. In his youth, Don was a gifted athlete in football, track, softball, and basketball, tying the Ohio 100 yard sprint record in 1938 and racing against Jesse Owens in an exhibition. In the community, he served as a Junior Achievement advisor, baseball coach, Athletic Booster and Band Booster, and a leader in Men of Faith. Don was talented woodworker, carpenter and artist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (Reifert) Ritzenthaler on September 24, 2013 after a loving marriage of over 72 years and his brother, Ray Ritzenthaler. Survivors include his children Karen Bennett of Munroe Falls, OH, John (Maureen McCormick) Ritzenthaler of New Carlisle, OH, Steve (Lori) Ritzenthaler of New Carlisle, OH, and Lori Beth Ritzenthaler of Burlingame, CA; grandchildren David Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, John Deem of Huntersville, NC, Gregory (Sheryl) Bennett of Akron, OH, Brad (Amy) Bennett of Stevensville, MD, and Jacob Ritzenthaler of Westerville, OH; grand-daughter-in-law Susan Deem of Cornelius, NC; great-grandchildren Leslie (Scott) Stevens, Mary Deem, Timothy, Jarrett, and Hailey Johnson, Samantha, Will, and Stephanie Savage, and Ethan, Caleb and Camon Bennett; three great-great-grandchildren Ruthie, Luke, and Hunter. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Ritzenthaler of Maumee, Ohio, and two nephews David and Jim Ritzenthaler and niece Beth Parlette. Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH on Tuesday from 4 until 7 pm. Funeral service will be hled in the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. . Interment in Toledo Memorial Park. If desired memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, St. Andrew Lutheran Church, or Crossroads Hospice in Donald Ritzenthaler's memory. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Emeritus at Fox Run Staff and all the Crossroads Hospice Staff who made his final days comfortable and peaceful.
