News Death Notice

RUTHERFORD, Harold Phillip 61, of Springfield, passed away at home on Monday, April 8 after a brief illness. He was born September 3, 1951, to Steve and Ethel Hollinger Rutherford in Jamaica, NY. Mr. Rutherford moved to Springfield in 2009 after a long career in higher education administration. He is survived by his wife, Vancenia Dowdell Rutherford; daughter, Paitra (Joeffrey) Trimmingham of Richmond, VA; a niece, Edna Rutherford and nephew, Anthony Ford both of Chicago; two grandchildren; and many great -nieces and nephews. Mr. Rutherford graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and Kent State University with a master's degree in speech. During his career, he worked for the City of East Cleveland, Fort Valley State University, The State University of New York, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. His professional accomplishments were recognized through numerous awards and fellowships, including the Harvard University Management Development Program and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. His greatest joy, however, was helping young people; and he served as an advisor and mentor to many. Harold (Phil) was well known for his quick wit and enthusiasm for cars. Friends also enjoyed his extensive music collection. Service for will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Covenant United Methodist Church, 529 Johnny Lytle Street, Springfield, Ohio. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. until time of service which will be at 11:00 am. with Rev. Diane Turner-Sharazz, officiating. Mr. Rutherford will be interred in Cleveland, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Porter - Qualls - Dunlap Funeral Home.
