News Death Notice

FREY, John W. Weakened by the infirmation of old age and diabetes, John W. Frey a resident of Berryville, Arkansas surrendered his immortal soul to the Lord, which gave it. John was born October 20th, 1923 and died October 27, 2013 at the age of 90. He was the son of John and Evelyn (Toland) Frey. He was born in Springfield, Ohio where he worked as a Barber and later joined the Springfield Fire Division. He retired in 1975 and he and his wife moved to Mundell Heights on Beaver Lake, Arkansas. John helped to organize the "Grassy Knob" Fire Department and served as their first Fire Chief. He was also a fishing guide, woodworker and lover of flowers and gardening. In 1999 he and his wife Frances moved to Berryville and John took up golfing again as he had enjoyed years back in Ohio. He served his country in WWII with the 24th Inf. Division in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Combat Infantry badge, "Philippine Liberation Medal" and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paul Frey, two sisters, Margaret Frey and Martha Schantz of Minnesota. He is survived by his wife Frances at home, one son John R. and wife Barbara of Springfield, Ohio, daughter Susan of Florida, one step daughter, Carla Evans of Idaho, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three sisters, Norma Rickabaugh of Minnesota, Dorothy Johnson of Ohio and Virginia Schantz of Indiana. He was a member of the Basin Springs Masonic Lodge of Eureka Springs. No services are scheduled at this time. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
