News Death Notice

SMITH, Mary Louise 101, of Springfield, passed away at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Friends Care Center, Yellow Springs. She was born at St. Joseph Orphanage in Cincinnati, OH on August 19, 1912 and adopted by John and Lillian (Barber) Canny at the age of 3. She was reared on the Irish hill in Springfield and attended St. Joseph School and Church. After her father passed away and she was a young lady, she went to work for Crowell Collier. She married Thomas E. Newman May 4, 1935 after which, when he became ill, she worked to take care of family. She later worked at Wobbe's Bakery, Schuler's Bakery, The Rustic Inn, and finally for Kelsey Hayes, retiring after more than 20 years in 1972. Survivors include her two sons and spouses, John (June) Newman of Arizona and Paul (Marsha) Newman of Springfield; grandchildren, Richard, Barton, Brett and Shawn Newman, Rebecca (Chris) Swartz, Brenda Bowen, Shelia Carroll, Dawn (Rob) Sheens and Erika (Nelson) White; 20 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and special nephew, Mike (Lynn) Mealy. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Thomas Newman and her second husband, Al Smith; stepsisters, Myrtle (John) Helms and Fannie (Charlie) Fick; special sister, Martha (Paul) Mealy; baby brother, Bobby Canny, and other family members. Mary was always there for whomever needed help. Now maybe her Lord Father in heaven needs her help. Visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. in CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Clark County Animal Shelter.
