PURDOM, William (Bill) Walter passed away peacefully on August 10, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Joan; his daughter Gail (Donn) Linkenhelt of Ojai; his son Mark (Silvana) Purdom of Modesto; his step-daughter Marisa (Ed) Earnest of Visalia; his grandchildren Kendall, Adam, Taylor, and Austin Linkenhelt; Katherine and Lindsay Purdom; step-grandchildren Daniela, Tamara Janelle, Jed, and Silas Earnest; sister Jane (Edwin) Gibson of Hudson, Ohio; cousin and best friend John (Millicent) Townsley; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Scott Purdom, Ellen Purdom Barber, step-father Warren Jackson Barber, and first wife D. Suzanne (Sue) Purdom. Bill was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on June 4, 1930, to parents Walter Scott Purdom and Ellen Tarbox Purdom. After his father died in 1939, his mother moved back to her home town of Cedarville, Ohio, with her children. Later she married her life-long friend Warren J. Barber who helped raise and educate both Bill and Jane. Bill graduated from Cedarville High School in 1948 and from Cedarville College in 1951 with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force
and was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. While there he received his Masters degree in Education from Trinity University. On December 24, 1955, he married D. Susanne Turkyl of Chicago, and after he completed his service, they settled in Riverside, California, where he began his teaching career in the elementary school. He moved to Redlands, California, in 1957 and taught junior high school. After that he returned to Riverside as an elementary principal and while there he established the Head Start Program in Riverside County. Bill received a doctorate in Education from USC in 1968 and was hired by the Ojai Unified School District as the Assistant Superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in June 1989. On June 13, 1981, he married Joan Phelps and was a loving step-father to her daughter Marisa Phelps. Bill was a fun-loving person who enjoyed his family, playing golf, and traveling. He was a loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather, and step-grandfather who will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but his spirit will live on in their hearts. At Bills wishes, a public memorial service will not be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Ojai Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1769, Ojai, California 93023.
