Jeff had attended Drake University, DesMoines, Iowa and graduated with a BA of History from the University of Minnesota where he was president of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. After graduation Jeff worked, for a short time, for the Ross Perot company of EDS Corp., Dallas, TX. Shortly thereafter, some 30 years ago, he moved back to Springfield to work in the family business, Ebner Sons, Inc., a business that was established in 1883. He was a member of the Scioto Valley Rugby Club, Columbus Athletic Club, represented the United States in the Maccabean Games, former member of Temple Shalom where he was the former Sunday School principal; and coached his son Nate's rugby team at Hilliard Davidson High School. Jeff's compassion for others continued after his death by being an organ donor Survivors include "the loves of his life" his wife, Amy, and his son, Nathan, who attends O.S.U.; a stepdaughter, Beth (Rodney) Bergfeld; his mother and stepfather, Lyla and Harvey Bailen, Seminole, FL; his father and stepmother, Richard and Jenny Ebner, Springfield; mother in law, Sandy Collins; two sisters, Jill and Ann Bailin; brother in law, Tony Collins; sister in law, Becky Collins; one step sister, Leilani Ebner; two step brothers, Todd and Randy Ebner; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and his golden lab, Magnum. Amy and Family -

So sorry to hear the news of Jeff's untimely passing. He was a terrific man, and so many have already added memories of his life so well. My memory of Jeff was when we first met, it was a rugby tour to New Zealand in 1979. On our tour Jeff was known as "Cannon Ball", mostly because if he was anywhere near the try line, he was going to score, and one time in particular he dove from about 5 meters out and blasted through 2 or 3 defenders to score. Another time we were staying with a couple in the South Island, and they had this mean old ram sheep that used to butt everyone, well Jeff gave that old ram a forearm shiver that left it dazed and confused. Our NZ hosts laughed about that during our whole stay and their ram never bothered any of us again.

I was stunned by news of Jeff's death. We had played rugby together in Des Moines in '77. I don't think I ever saw him without that big grin on his face. He was so "gung-ho" that after working out on evenings with no practice, he'd want to kick the ball around the yard to sharpen our skills. At Milwaukee's tourney he was called on to play scrum-half,though he had been a center at that time. He made up with toughness what he lacked in experience, leading us to a win in the final over the host team, smiling the whole time, of course. I'm so sorry.

Dick and Jenny and Lyla,
I was heart broken to learn of your loss and, after reading all of the notes left for you and for Amy and Nate, I know that he brought love and was loved by those he touched. These notes show that he was an inspiration to so many who were happy to call him friend, teammate, teacher, helper and family. May you find comfort in the love that you shared with Jeff, and that he has shared with so many. You are in my prayers.

I played football with Jeff Ebner at Robbinsdale High School in NW Minneapolis area. He was the meanest, toughest strong safety you ever met. There was no one that was a better team mate or friend than Jeff. He was tough, smart, had your back, and always had something nice to say. I remember his senior year - Jeff was trying to play thru a broken ankle and we finally had to tell him to go sit down. He did not mind the pain, and wanted to play so badly. I spent great times with Jeff as a teeneager and early 20s working out at the U of MN, or palling around in northern Minnesota. He tried to get me to play rugby but I am much too sane for that. The parties were fun though. It is much too sad to think that Jeff's life has ended this early. God bless Jeff and his great family. Jeff, we will see you in Heaven.

To Jeff's family,
I am very sad to learn of this tragedy. Jeff was a classmate at Robbinsdale High School (MN) where he excelled as an athlete and was a friend to all. Even though he moved back to OH many years ago, we were able to enjoy his company at some of our past reunions. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Ann and Family,

I met Jeff this past year when he accompanied Ann on a trip (Ann and I work together). I just wanted to offer my heartfelt sympathy to you all at this senseless tragedy. I was really impacted by Jeff in the very brief time we spent together. he was a guy who had all the priorities in the right places. Not affected by who you were, what your title was or any of that stuff. He proudly worked at the family business for years, loved his family, close to best pals with his sister, and the sun absolutely rose and set on his son Nate. In the short time I spent with he and Ann on that trip, that is what I learned and greatly admired about Jeff. I am clearly not the only one whose life he touched in such a brief, but positive way based on the rest of these posts. I hope they , along with all your great memories, give you some comfort in this time of sorrow.

Warmly,

Catherine Moore

Thoughts for the Ebner family:

"Remember Me"

Remember me in the glow of the sunset,
or when Robins return in the spring . . . .
Know that in life, there are ups and downs,
remember beauty exists in all things.

Remember me as the butterfly flutters,
and drinks the sweet nectar of flowers. . . .
Life is as simple as noursihment,
within all, there is loving power.

Remember me with the radiance of the sun,
as the glow of me warms your face. . . .
When the gentle breeze blows your hair to your eyes,
know it is me sending God's Grace.

Remember me when a newborn cries,
for soon tears of joy will appear . . . .
As you gaze upon the newness of life,
know that I am close to you near.

Remember me as you pray at night,
for this is when you sense me the most . . .
Know that I am, and forever will be,
alive, with God, as my host.

...............................................................
May remembering help to ease
the sorrow that you feel,
and bring peace and comfort
to your heart.

With Sincere Sympathy
Jim and Joann Riley (Riley's Asphalt Paving Service)

Helping our community garden grow is an accomplishment that your family will forever be remembered for. It may be just a junk-yard to some. However, the fact is that we needed one! Your family has been a wonderful asset that has shown loyalty, for many decades to Springfield. Thank you for being productive citizens, a local employer, among other things, a family of value to the world. May God, bless your family and friends for all of the emotional times yet to come. Please know that there are people who will still pray for you to get through those moments. It will be hard to smile, but it will be intrinsic to the rest of your journeys. I am saddened by what has happened. God Bless You all, and Mr. Ebner...God rest your soul Sir...

My name is Cher and I am a friend of Jeffs sister Jill. My Poem to Jeff.

Jeff of all the people in your life, from beginning to the end, youv'e been a special blessing, a dear and faithful friend.
Youv'e fillid their lives with laughter, shared sorrows, joys and tears. Youv'e stood by them and held there hand and walked with them through the years.
When they needed someone to listen, they new you would always be there, when they weathered the storms of life, you were the one who cared.
So in this circle we call life, from beggining to the end. They have been blessed to have you beside them as there dear and faithful friend.

May you grow closer everyday you live and may there be no limit to the love you give.
God Bless
