News Death Notice

WALTERS, William R. 87, of Vancouver, WA, formerly of Springfield, OH, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver. Bill was born January 28, 1926, in Dunn Center, ND, to Frank and Hazel (Montgomery) Walters. His family later moved to Dickinson, ND. He briefly attended the University of Kansas before enlisting in the Army to serve in WWII. Upon his honorable discharge after 2.5 years of service in Europe, he attended North Dakota State for two years, finishing his Bachelor of Music in piano performance at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, in 1950. He went on to earn both his MA and PhD from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Bill joined the faculty of Wittenberg University's School of Music in 1955, where he taught for 35 years until his retirement in 1990. In addition to teaching piano, he founded and directed the Collegium Musicum, a Renaissance music group, and taught courses in numerous subjects including music theory, counterpoint, music history, future studies, and ethnomusicology. Bill had a passionate interest in the music and popular culture of Japan, where he spent a sabbatical in 1976. Upon his retirement, he returned to Japan and taught for several years at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka. Bill was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church of Springfield, OH, where he served on the Church Council and played an active role in the musical life of the church. In 1995 he moved to Vancouver, WA, where he attended Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Bill is survived by his former wife Mary Ellen Walters of Seattle, WA, his sons Mark Walters (Paulette Auth and daughter Emily) of Rockwall, TX and Michael Walters (Deborah) of Duvall, WA, his daughters Elizabeth Walters (Rhonda Rider) of Boston, MA and Nancy Unsworth (David) of Portland, OR, as well as grandchildren David, Wendy, and Kimberly Walters and Nelson and Chelsea Unsworth, and great-grandson Jaidyn Walters. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 12513 SE Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver, WA, 98683.
