News Death Notice
GIRTEN, Owen 89, of Springfield died October 7, 2012 in Oakwood Village. He was born January 12, 1923 in Cincinnati, OH to Elmer and Bertha (Donaldson) Girten. He was a long time member of Northwood Hills Country Club, a member of United Senior Services, volunteered at Community Hospital for 20 years and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II. Owen retired as a staff representative of the United Steelworkers of America. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Shirley A. Baer; four children, Candy (Jim) Arcaro, Dayton, OH, Gary (Luanna) Girten, Plain City, OH, Beverly Girten, Mountain View, CA, and Rebecca (Fred) Strong, Riverside, OH; two grandchildren, David Arcaro and Angela Wade; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Emily Wade; step children, Barbara Edwards, Garry D. (Pam) Garrett, Kathryn (Jay) Friedman, and Norman E. Baer; numerous step grandchildren, including Danny Edwards and Dru Click; and a brother, Elmer (Mavis) Girten, Bowling Green, OH. He was preceded in death by his former wife and mother of his children, Vedna, and a previous wife, Alice. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Richard Darr, Oakwood Glaesner Center and Community Mercy Hospice for their love and care. In accordance with his instructions, Owen's body was donated to Wright State University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Northridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Woode officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior in the church.
