BYRNES, James J.
BYRNES, James J. passed away peacefully on Feb. 18, 2015, at the age of 92. Born the son of Irish immigrants, James (or "Jim") graduated from Columbia University in 1943, as a Chemical Engineer. He worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II, helping to develop the Atomic bomb. Jim met his future bride, Joan, at Brookhaven Labs; they married in 1951 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year. He later worked for Burns and Roe, Inc. as a project manager for power plants, and ended his career as a Vice President. Jim always said he was "lucky" in work and in love, and particularly enjoyed solving problems and fixing things. For 20 years, he happily fixed bicycles for young children, as a volunteer at the Christmas Toy Shop. Jim and Joan are blessed with three daughters, Maureen, Eileen, and Colleen; and wonderful in-laws by marriage, Stephen, and Darcy. They are proud of their grandsons, Matthew (and his wife Theresa), and James. Jim was best known for his wickedly dry sense of humor; enjoyed by family, coworkers, and friends alike. He is loved and will be missed. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be planned for the springtime. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Suncoast Hospice or The Christmas Toy Shop.
