McMULLEN, Chester Bartow III 66, died on Nov. 28, 2012 at his home in Clearwater. A descendent of a pioneering Pinellas County family, he graduated from Clearwater High School in 1964, where he wrote for the school newspaper and won first place in debate at the National Forensic League state championship. He started college, but interrupted his formal education to volunteer with the U.S. Marine Corps
and serve a tour of duty in Vietnam, stationed in Phu Bai. Upon his return in 1968, he earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of South Florida in Tampa, where he also was captain of the school's College Bowl team, which competed nationally on that televised show. In 1992, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a dissertation on Victorian literature. He was a writer and an educator and taught at Colorado State University, The George Washington University, and Santa Fe College in Gainesville. His articles appeared in a variety of publications, including the "Tampa Tribune," and the "Country Chronicle" newspapers; "Poudre" and "Denver" magazines; and the scholarly journal "Nineteenth-Century Literature." A selection of his letters home from Vietnam were published in the highly-regarded collection, "Vietnam Voices," edited by John Clark Pratt (Penguin, 1984). An avid outdoorsman, Buck--as he was known to many friends--enjoyed archery, fishing, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, kayaking and canoeing and he pursued those activities from the Colorado Rockies to the Dry Tortugas, through the Okeefenokee Swamp and down many of Florida's rivers. He is predeceased by a daughter, Tess Gonsalves. Survived by a daughter, Whitney Bard; siblings Martha, Priscilla, Melvin, Dean and Daniel; former wife, Karen Seabury, also from Clearwater; as well as a number of other family members. His grandfather, Chester B. McMullen, was a Clearwater attorney and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and his father, Chester B. McMullen Jr., was also a Clearwater attorney. His mother, Ruth Dean McMullen, was originally from Colfax, LA., where many family members remain, including Lloyd "Bill" Dean with whom he was especially close. He is remembered fondly and will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
