Joe Paxton BARNETT

BARNETT, Joe Paxton 90, found peace on Oct. 20, 2013, at Suncoast Hospice in St. Petersburg. Joe was born in Kentucky but grew up in Brooksville. He attended the University of Arkansas and then the University of Florida where he graduated with a degree in Horticulture. He was a B-17 pilot in WWII stationed stateside. After the war he worked in Ft. Pierce before moving in 1957 to Temple Terrace where he was sales manager at Stauffer Chemical Company. In 1968, he moved to Belle Glade to become VP and later President of Consolidated Chemical Company. In 1979, he retired briefly to Homosassa only to be lured back to work with his former U of F roommate doing what he loved, the fertilizer and chemical business helping citrus growers in Wauchula. There he bought a citrus grove and worked with Florida Fertilizer Company until 1988 when he bought a house in Boone, NC, and then retired to the mountains in 1989. In 2005, he moved to St. Petersburg to live in an independent retirement center and spend more time with his granddaughter. Joe leaves a son, J. Paxton Barnett (Janice); a daughter, Karen V.Barnett (Lori); and a granddaughter, Caroline. Joe loved Gator football, to play golf, go fishing or best of all riding through the woods at hunting camp just watching all the wonders of nature. He always looked for new roads to drive just to see where they would take him. He will now take his final drive to the Brooksville cemetery where he will rest with family. Family will receive friends from 10-11 am, with Services at 11 am, on Saturday, Nov. 2nd, at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 Dr. MLK N., St. Petersburg.
