OLSON, John B. age 93, of Largo, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at home. John was a United States Navy and a WWII veteran. He was a member of The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Tinley Park Lodge No. 810, in Tinley Park, IL, and he was a member of the Knights Templar. John graduated from Carroll College in Waukesha, WI, with a degree in accounting and went on to work for the IRS after serving in WWII. John later went on to start his newspaper career in Little Rock, AR, as controller for the Arkansas Gazette. He moved to St. Petersburg on March 17, 1953 and began working as controller for the St. Petersburg Times before becoming the general manager in 1957. In 1961, he continued as general manager of the Western Edition of the New York Times, Detroit Free Press, and Chicago Tribune. While at the Detroit Free Press, he was on the board of directors of the Knight newspapers. He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Virginia Olson. John is survived by his daughters, Joanne Small (Allan), Elizabeth Anderson (Herbert); one son, Edmund Olson (Beverly); six grandchildren, Deborah, Michael, Wayne, Lori, Kirsten, and Charles; and five great-grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life today, Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 am, at the Reese Funeral Home in Seminole. Interment will be at Royal Palm South at a later date.
