John Joseph "Jack" HICKEY

HICKEY, John Joseph "Jack" age 91, died on July 18, 2013. Jack was born in Corning, NY, the only child of LeRoy D. Hickey and Augusta Schroeder Hickey. Jack graduated in 1940 from Corning Free Academy where he played football. After graduation, he worked at Corning Glass Works until World War II when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps & married Muriel Jane Cilley. Jack's last pilot training site was at Drew Field in Tampa. He served in the 15th Air Force, 5th Wing, 2nd Bomb Group, 20th Squadron stationed in Amandola, Italy. As a B-17 Pilot, Jack flew 50 missions and was awarded several honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross & the Air Medal. In 1951, the young family moved from Corning to the Forest Hills area of Tampa. Jack worked for Southern Bread Company in Hyde Park, initially driving a delivery truck and retired as a senior manager. Jack and Muriel divorced in 1967. He married Annette Odman Schiro in 1969, and they spent the next 40 years golfing, boating, and traveling the country in their motor home. Jack and Annette lived in Altomonte Springs where Jack was a customer service rep. for Sysco Food Services until his second retirement. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Annette; and his grandson, Andrew Jason Schiro. He is survived by his son, Michael(Patricia) Hickey of Santa Rosa, CA; daughter, Janis (Michael) Hickey Schiro of Ruskin; and daughter, Nancy (Peter) Hickey Hughes of Tampa. Jack is also survived by his stepson, Steven (ReBecca) of Riverview; his stepdaughter, Phyllis (John) Schiro Walker, of Clermont; his grandchildren, Michael Schiro, and Susan Schiro Rawson; and his great- granddaughters, Lauren Rawson, Genevieve Schiro, and Adriana Schiro. Jack had a long and fulfilling life and was known for his sharp mind and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. The family is very thankful for the kindness and care of the staff at Sun Towers in Sun City Center where he moved in Feb. 2013. In a family tradition, Jack's cremains will be spread in the same location as Annette's and grandson Andrew's cremains. Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, Funeral Home & Crematory (813)677-9494
