Lionel Ewart Hamlett

HAMLETT, Lionel Ewart 79, passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2012. Lionel was born in 1933 in Cardiff, Wales, son of Lionel E. Hamlett Sr. of Cardiff and Dorothy Hamlett (Skidmore) of East Islip, NY. Lionel's family immigrated to the USA in 1948. Upon graduation from high school, Lionel went to work in New York City. He joined the Army and served in the 11th Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, KY during the Korean Conflict. He became an American citizen in 1955, the same year his beloved Dodgers finally won the World Series. Lionel completed his college education under the GI bill, graduating from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. Lionel worked over 40 years in banking, retiring as regional branch administrator of a major New York bank. He served as president of the Board of the American Banking Institute in Suffolk County on Long Island. He also served on the Suffolk County Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. He was also a member of the Meridian Lodge F.&A.M. in Islip for 50 years. Lionel loved boating on the waters of the Great South Bay on Long Island and summers with his family on Fire Island. Lionel is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Lynda Wheeler Hamlett. The couple shared a home in Great River NY before retiring to Largo. Loving family members include son Robert and daughter Cynthia Glavin; grandchildren Joshua, Christian, Brianna, Kirsten, Justin and Ian; aunts and cousins, as well as Lynda's sisters and brother. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Anona United Methodist Church in Largo on Thursday, November 8, 11am. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Suncoast Hospice or the Salvation Army, Blue Point NY.
