JOYNES, Madalene Mayer In loving memory of our beautiful mother, who passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 92 on Dec. 21, 2013. She was the youngest child of Julian Mayer and Beulah Weyler, born on Jan. 14, 1921 in Fowlerton, IN. She had three brothers, Leon, Emmanuel, and Kenneth, and a sister, Mary, who have predeceased her. Madalene lived an energetic, creative, and full life from the time she was a young woman to the later days of her life. In early years, as a stay-at-home mom, she became a Girl Scout leader and taxidermist; all that quickly changed when she learned to be a florist. She opened her first flower shop in Ft. Recovery, OH where she made pottery in molds in addition to floral designs. In 1954, Madalene moved with her two daughters to Tarpon Springs with a job in radio advertising, and soon after opened a florist, The Tropical Shop. In the late 1950s, she also was a local newspaper reporter for the St. Petersburg Times, an artist and a bill collector. By 1962, she purchased Kikilis Florist from the original owners, and in 1969 opened the Holiday Florist in Holiday. Madalene became the first woman inducted into the Holiday Rotary in 1989 and she devoted many years as a Rotarian. In 2008, she was honored as a lifetime member for her community service. We, her daughters, Sharon Sawyer and Phyllis Kolianos (Pete), could fill a book with our mother's love of life, talents, generosity and positive energy. She touched many lives and although not perfect, she surely did it "her way." She leaves as her legacy, four loving grandchildren, Melissa Hill, Kim Dudley, Mark Sawyer and Toni Daru, eight great-grandchildren and 11 nephews and nieces. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the Faith Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Tarpon Springs on Jan. 2, 2014 at 5 pm. Memorials can be offered to the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society, Rotary Scholarships, or Suncoast Hospice. Vinson Funeral Home, Tarpon Springs, 727-937-6111

Madalene was the First Women inducted into the Rotary Club of Holiday - I was honored to call her a Rotary Sister and present her with a lifetime membership to the Rotary Club of Holiday as president that year. She has been missed by our weekly meeting - but always in our hearts. My sincere sympathy to her family...

Dear Family,
Aunt Madalene will truly be missed by so many people. What a joy it was to have her in our lives. We will always have our memories and many stories. She raised two beautiful women both inside and out. She always had time
to listen to all of us. It is our privilege to have know her.
Our love and God's Peace for All.

So sad to here of Madelene's passing. Grew up just down the street from her house. Daughter Sharon and her family were influential in my early years of Girl Scouts. Mrs. Joynes' family is her greatest legacy. She will be missed.
May her memory be eternal. God bless.
