Ray Charles WUNDERLICH M.D. Ph.D. Jr.

WUNDERLICH, Ray Charles Jr. MD, PhD 84, died May 1, 2014 in St. Petersburg. A St. Petersburg native and lifetime resident, he was the son of Ray C. Wunderlich Sr, D.O. and Myrtle Ruth Wunderlich. He was born in Gulfport and attended local schools. He graduated from the University of Florida with honors, and from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City where he met his wife Elinor Howell Wunderlich. They were married in Manhattan and settled in St. Petersburg after his residency in Rochester, NY. He fulfilled his military service in Panama City, FL. The Wunderlichs settled in Lakewood then built the family home in the pink streets on Serpentine Drive. Ray and Elinor built a thriving pediatric practice at Suncoast Medical Clinic focusing on children's developmental issues. He later became a courageous pioneer of nutritional medicine, a pursuit that unlocked the doors of healing and quality of life for many. Recognizing the importance of exercise, tennis and then running became a lifelong passion for the whole family. He authored many books and articles on nutrition and literature, was a passionate student and teacher of Latin, and earned his PhD in English Literature in 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife Elinor and sister, Marjorie Wunderlich Saltsman. He is survived by 4 children, Mary Faurot of McCall, ID, Janet Matthews, Ray Charles Wunderlich III, both of St. Petersburg, David Wunderlich of Chevy Chase, MD; and 6 grandchildren, Laurel and Ian Faurot, Kristina and Amanda Matthews, and David and Elizabeth Wunderlich LeCours. The family will hold a celebration of his life Wednesday, May 7 at 10:30 am at Pioneer Settlement at Boyd Hill Preserve, 2900 31st St. S., Gate 1, St. Petersburg (informal attire).
