Robert Godric SMITH

SMITH, Robert Godric 91¸ of St. Petersburg, died on Sept. 11, 2013. Born May 21, 1922, in Clarion, PA, he was the son of Frederick A. and Frances Reinsel Smith. He was a graduate of Clarion High School. During WWII Robert was a Captain in the 15th Army Air Corps. He flew 25 combat missions as a B-24 bomber pilot, earning four battle stars and the Air Medal with two clusters. After service, he settled in Toledo, Ohio where he worked 16 years at Variety Club Beverage Co. and raised a family of 5 with his wife, Patricia Dorothy Smith. Robert began a 20 year career with Cadbury Schweppes in 1966, permanently moving to St. Petersburg. He was noted for his fishing prowess along Gandy Bridge and Masters Bayou. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for over 45 years, serving in the Knights of Columbus. Robert was married for 62 years to the late Patricia D. Smith. He is survived by his sister, Frances Frost of Clarion, PA; his brother, Charles Smith of Huntington, PA; three sons, Robert H. (Mattie) Smith of Atlanta, Richard G. (Patricia) Smith and Ronald W. (Lori) Smith of St Petersburg; daughters, Carol M. (Thomas) Mina of Keystone Heights and Janet S. Long of St Petersburg; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his spouse, Patricia; sisters, Mary Alice and Patricia; and brother, William. Visitation will be held from 5 to 6 pm today in the Anderson McQueen Funeral Home at 2201 9th St. N., St. Petersburg. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 12:30 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church, 200 78th Ave NE, St. Petersburg.
