Robert UNGER

UNGER, Robert 59, of Lithia, entered into glory on Jan. 29, 2014, after succumbing to complications of an equestrian accident. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served as a radioman during the Vietnam War era. He retired from the Hillsbo-rough Sheriff's Office as a Master Sergeant after serving for 33 years as a Deputy Sheriff; beginning as a correctional officer, street deputy, K-9 officer, property detective, stre-et corporal, sergeant of internal affairs for 9 years, and then sergeant of a highly effective street crimes unit. He served at five hurricane disasters in Florida, and was innovative in introducing the use of K-9s into Street crimes units and was the first to combine K-9s and helicopters in search operations. He was an active member of his church, teaching Sunday School for 22 years and serving as lay leader. He is remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandpa and faithful Christian. He was a friend to everyone he met and demonstrated kindness to animals domestic and wild. He is survived by his wife of 39 years; son; daughter; and 4 grandchildren, who were the light of his life. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1st at 11 am, at Saint Stephens Catholic Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Road, Valrico, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10 am. Interment to follow at Hopewell Memorial Gardens, Plant City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Black Dagger Military Hunt Club at www.blackdaggermhc.org.
