Dr. Thomas Anderson DUNCAN

DUNCAN, Dr. Thomas Anderson died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Dugan Duncan. Dr. Duncan (Tom) was born in Atlanta, GA, on July 14, 1928 to Robert and Mary (O'Loughlin) Duncan. He graduated from Atlanta Boys' High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army. While attending Emory University in Atlanta, he was called to active duty to serve in the Korean War. He returned to Emory, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953 and continued there to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1957. He completed an internship and a two-year internal medicine residency at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. followed by a Fellowship in cardiology. While in college, Dr. Duncan met his bride, Elizabeth Dugan, a life-long resident of St. Petersburg. They were married at St. Peter's Church (now the Cathedral Church of St. Peter) on March 15 1954 by his brother, the Rt. Rev James L. Duncan. In 1961, after completing his Fellowship, the couple moved to St. Petersburg. He was devoted to his patients as he practiced internal medicine and cardiology privately from 1961-1998. He was on staff at St. Anthony's Hospital, Edward White Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center. After retirement he enjoyed volunteering his medical services at the St. Petersburg Free Clinic, playing golf and bridge with friends, and spending time with his family. Dr. Duncan was a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his five children, Lela Loughlin (Blanton) Garnett of St. Petersburg; Moira Adeline Duncan of St. Petersburg; Dr. Robert Auldon (Melissa) Duncan of Greenville, NC; Elizabeth Anderson (Dargan) McAfee of Macon, GA; Patricia Kathleen (George) Isiminger of Bradenton. He treasured time with his grandchildren, Elizabeth Garnett (Robert) Hasbrouck, Kathleen Garnett, Duncan Isiminger, Caitlin Garnett, Mary Isiminger, Thomas Duncan, Catherine Duncan, Auldon Duncan, Dargan McAfee III and James Duncan. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Duncan Driscoll; sister-in-laws, Elaine Duncan and Lela Randolph (Robert) Runcie; and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Duncan was a member of the Pinellas County Medical Society, Squire's Club, Suncoasters, Rotary, and St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He attended the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry as Junior and Senior Warden. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He was Chairman of the Board at Shorecrest Preparatory School and on the Board at Canterbury School. He also enjoyed being the Shorecrest football team doctor for many years. Visitation 5-7 pm, Thursday, May 23rd, at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 9th Street North.
