I knew Eric a very long time ago when my family had a house on the lake. He was very special to me and knowing that he's gone I feel that I've lost a bit of my childhood. My condolences to his family.

How nice it was to read through all the wonderful things that others wrote about Eric. It was almost as good as being there to share with others at his service. And yes...everything they said was so very true, and it warmed our hearts. Eric was our neighbor back in NJ and he was the very best neighbor you could ask for! Warm, funny, helpful...owned every tool in the book if you needed to borrow something, and half the time he offered to help with the job as well! FOND memories of the patriotic music he would pipe through the neighborhood on holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July.We missed him when he moved to Florida, but still kept in touch. It is sad that heaven needed him all too soon........but now they are smiling under his "command" up there. God bless his family that misses him dearly. Love, Virginia and Bill

Hearing so much of what everyone wrote has shown me a different side of my dad that I didn't know, yet some of it, I sit there and say, "yep, that was him!" I truly miss him and wish I would've spent more time with him. I cherish all our time together and Dad was the best father I could've asked for . He raised us right and loved us so much. Thank you everyone for your kind words and I don't doubt for a second how much he cared about all of you. I love you Dad!

I was Eric's VMI roommate in our freshman and sophomore (4th and 3rd class) years before I transferred to California. Eric was a wonderful guy, and had a surprising passion for the theater! It was with great sorrow that I learned of his passing, especially when I saw he lived in the Tampa area, to which I moved a little over a year ago - it would have been great to rekindle our friendship. (I was out of state for his funeral.) My sympathies to his family, for Eric died far too young. In my memory, he'll always be my funloving and mischievous 19 year old friend and roommate.

Eric was a very well liked individual. I have been here at USSOCOM since 1998, and have known Eric for quite some time. He has always greeted me and others with a heart-warming smile and genuine concern of our well-being. He would always come in our resource office and say...."I don't hear money being spent, let's spend some money!". I will truly miss the morning meetings he held in the J65 office where he often mixed comedy with the daily routine of ensuring everyone was staying crisp regarding their portion to supporting the "Warfighter" down range with the latest technology in communication. He was a very smart man, and I will always consider Eric as a good friend. Ray Almon, Tampa, FL

My sincere condolece to the family of Col Buchanan. Aside from being a caring and very human military leader, he was a good person and his loss occured to soon. He inspired so many and was trusted by all. He was no politician, but rather honest, sincere, and gave you the bad news with the good. God bless him in Heaven and his family that he left so suddenly here. May you find comfort in knowing his spirit and kind deeds forever live in the hearts of those he touched. Dear Anna . . . my heartfelt condolences at this time of deep loss. I am grateful to God for the short time shared serving under the supervision of your dear husband. The first thought I have is how Colonel Buchanan engendered an atmosphere of calm amidst chaos. As a leader, his presence never crowded, but signaled his support and faith in his troops getting the job done. I am certain that the overflowing wealth of memories you have shared with him will bring reviving you comfort during periods of great sadness. Thank you for sharing his picture with such an endearing smile and with his 290th cap. Thank you also for the opportunity to pay him tribute by attending his funeral mass and the burial rites at the Florida National Cemetery.

Eric was one of the nicest, most helpful people at USSOCOM. It was so easy and fun to work with him. Always always cheerful, always friendly, even if we needed to agree to disagree. To say that he will be sorely missed is such a huge understandment. My sincerest sympathies to his family. We are all just heartbroken over his passing.

May 21, 2011

My deepest sympathy goes out to Eric's family. He was a great man, husband, father, and leader. We spent several years together and he always found the positive side of all situations. He had a bubbly demeanor and always projected a positive image for those he was leading. I will always remember all the good times we had together and the 15 plus years that I was able to know this great human being. May God Bless his soul. Brian Moore (Dubai, UAE)

Eric was my Friend, Brother and my Brother Rat! He knew how to work hard and play even harder. Eric was a true citzen soldier who will be truly missed. I now only wished my travels to Tampa came more often to share a beer with someone who was a true leader in this world.

I remember when he relinquished command I shook Col Buchanan's hand. I told him in an embrace even though change is inevitable, you will always be my commander. He smiled at me and told me "thank you, that means a lot to me". My sincerest condolences to the Buchanan family. God Bless

I stayed in the military longer then my 20 because of Col. Buchanan. He made me always feel that he was my personal commander. I never understood who the heck all those people where in formations at the unit. I would say to myself, wait he's all mine! Where did they come from" But this is how he made you feel. Like you were the only one that mattered to him! I love you Sir! Thanks for everything.

I served with Eric as a member of the Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE) in the 2003-2004 timeframe.... just like the obituary picture shows, no matter what was going on, Eric was always quick to smile, even during very stressful situations. My sympathies, thoughts, and prayers to his family...

Col Buchanan was a legend. He always came into the work area and said, "lets get to work in here." His laugh was great and he was a very technically and professionally gifted man. I will miss him very much. God Bless his family in this time of loss. Mike (Tampa)

My thought and prayers are with the family. As a former sat command QC rep I remember Col Buchanan as a a fair and can-do officer with the 290th. Godspeed.

May 19, 2011

I remember Col Buchanan as a Capt and Maint Officer and then as my commander at the 290th JCSS..
His goal for everyone was "how do we get it done". He wasn't interested in why it couldn't.
His leadership as commander after we were activated following 9-11
transformed us from into tru warriors able to do what ever the task was. All that AAAAAAARMY TRRRRRAINING SIR.
Some wondered why we were doing it but over time it was obvious to all that it made us a better unit
He was the right man in the right place at the right time. It was an honor to serve with him.
I will miss him and his dry wit. My prayers to all his family
