Obituary

KING, Coach Gene B. of Tampa, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 21, 2013. He was a great husband, father and role model. He lived his life dedicated to helping young athletes become the best men they could possibly be. He knew it was more about understanding discipline, building character, and applying strong principles, than it was about winning. He was born in 1927 in Richmond, KY. He came to Tampa in the early 1950s and was a student athlete, playing football, at The University of Tampa. While attending The University of Tampa he met his wife and lifelong love, Barbara King. Gene had a passion for playing and coaching sports. He was a Backfield Coach at Robinson High School from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s. He coached receivers and tight ends at the University of Tampa from the mid 1960s until the program ended in 1975. During his career, he coached eight All American football players. Gene stayed involved in sports after the football program ended at the University of Tampa. For over 30 years, he was the Committee Chairman and President of the Sports Hall of Fame at the University of Tampa. For over 25 years, he enjoyed being on the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee for the Hall of Fame and Outback Bowls. Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Barbara E. King. He is survived by his three children, Bruce King, Vicki Rivas and Alan King; six grandsons, Ryan, Garrett, Brent, Brad, Austin and Brady; and five great-grandchildren, Jaidelyn, Kai, Braylin, Wyatt, and Olivia. His life will be celebrated on Tuesday Feb. 26. 11 am at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, Carrollwood Chapel, l3207 West Bears Ave. Tampa FL 33618, with family receiving friends from 10-11 am. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Gene will be deeply missed by his family and friends but will live on in their hearts and memories. We love you Dad.
