John Gist was a fine athlete and he became the first African American to join the Kids and Kubs Three-Quarter Century Softball Club of St. Petersburg. He was a great teammate and a friend to every member. I valued him as a personal friend and miss having him on the team.

John was a dear friend with whom I worked with for many years at PTEC in the truck driving program. He always had a great attitude and smile for everyone he met. He had a great demeanor with all of his students and they all loved him as well. It truely is a sad day and great loss.
