To Joe's family, my prayers are with you at this time. May you be comforted by remembering the great love Joe had for each of you.
Joe's passing has left a deep hole in many lives including mine. For me, that hole is being filled with gratitude for his presence in my life. I have lost not only a friend but a mentor, yet Joe's presence will stay with me as his example and gentle teaching guide me to live fully, use the talents the Lord blessed me with, stay curious, keep learning, be generous, reach out to others and keep a sense of humor. Thank you, Joe, for everything!

To the MacDougald family, with deepest sympathies for your loss. For those of us who didn't know Joseph, we only need to know his son to appreciate what a fine man he must have been.

Dearest Friend,
My world will never again be the same. I will see your face at every flea market...hear your voice and laughter in restaurants....count the brass buttons on every uniform I pass....check every lunch box...savor every glass of wine and check every basket I see for pine needles. You taught me so much and gave me such comfort. If only I could have done the same for you. We all know that there is indeed a place in heaven for a guy named Joe.
Meet me at the bench in November.
