HOWELL, Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Carey Sr. 79, formerly of McComb, MS, died at Bay Pines, VA Hospital on Sept. 28, 2012. Visitation will be at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd from 5-8 pm and will continue on Thursday from 9-9:45 am. Graveside services will be held at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb on Thursday, Oct 4th at 10 am. Lieutenant Colonel Howell will be buried with full military honors. Dr. David Millican will officiate. Lieutenant Colonel Howell was born in Pike County, MS, on April 7, 1933 to Lewis D. Howell Sr. and Dovie Ritchie Howell. He attended McComb City Schools and Southwest Junior College. Lieutenant Colonel Howell received a BS degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a MBA degree from Mississippi State University. Lieutenant Colonel Howell enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. After 3 years of service in the Navy, he was honorably discharged and entered college. After completing his academic education, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army where he completed his 20 years of military service. He was a Korean and Vietnam Veteran. Lieutenant Colonel Howell was a computer software engineer and developed and implemented computer systems for the U.S. Army. After he retired from the Army, he developed and implemented computer systems at Auburn University, the University of Miami, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Duty, Honor, Country, and Family values are the principles and standards that guided Lieutenant Colonel Howell throughout his life and his military service. These same principles and standards are also reflected by the actions and accomplishments of his wife and children. Among the many medals, decorations and awards received by Lieutenant Colonel Howell during his 20 years of military service are the Bronze Star, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, The Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and The Vietnam Staff Service Medal. Lieutenant Colonel Howell was preceded in death by his heart and soul, Lavonna Roberts Howell, formerly of Pittsburg, TX. They were married for 48 years and have 4 children. He was also preceded in death by his parents & siblings, Elizabeth Howell Hilton, Sarah Louise Howell Martin, Lewis David Howell Jr. and Lowery Howell. Survivors include 3 daughters, Charlotte Howell Rutherford of Houston, TX, Karen Howell Hankinson & husband, Patrick of St. Petersburg, Catherine Howell Revels & husband, Chris of Winston-Salem, NC; 1 son, Lawrence Carey Howell Jr. & his wife, Rose of Austin, TX; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ernestine Howell Riddle and Lyndell Howell Johnston; and a host of very special nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be a Military Honor Guard.
