John McGahee

Mary Lou,
My name is John McGahee; Larry called me Johnny. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I've got so many stories! I lived on Suwanee Ave and he on Branch. We did a lot of running around. He had a green bike - a Schwinn, if my memory serves me correctly. I had a red bike. We did a lot of riding and goofing off in the alleys and through the neighborhoods of Seminole Heights. We got into a little "trouble" goofing off at Milian's one time. Quite often we would go to Schiro's and get a coke after cashing in bottles at the Quik Chek. Larry wasn't in any of my high school classes, but in 1977, ended up being my insurance man when I opened a jewelry store "Solomon's Mine" in Clearwater. I talked with him several times over the next 10 yrs. regarding store business. One day I visited him over by Henry & Ola Park and we caught up on old times then. I had not heard from him for many years until about 5 months ago when he called out of the blue and told me that he was dealing with cancer. I told him we would be praying for him and I would talk to him after his surgery to discuss the outcome. Since then, we have played phone tag and I never did get to speak with him again. One of his replies was that getting to the phone was an issue but when he got stronger, he would get back with me. I responded with a message that if he needed any help, I would be there. I never received a reply after that. I never thought he wouldn't make it out of this, because we had plans to go shooting when he got better. Mary Lou, if you would like to call me, I would love to speak with you -

I was very young when I met Larry. I had heard of so many stories about his high school escapades with Steve and knew they had a great friendship. Larry got me my first job in Tampa in Insurance and as a result, I was able to retire early and enjoy life. Larry was a kind, thoughtful, generous and dedicated man. He also gave the best bear hugs! His sailing passion and the hard work which made him so successful were admirable. I was proud to have our son named after him. Mary Lou, my prayers and love are with you. He will be missed terribly, but always remembered with a smile.

Larry was and will remain a wonderful man in the hearts of the Colson family. Larry and my father, Steve Colson, were best friends growing up and went to school together. My brother, Julian Lawerence Colson, was named after Larry. He will be missed. Our sympathy goes to his mother. Love, the Colsons.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Larry in the early '70s. He was always a very friendly and helpful person.
