BROOKINS, Deacon Wayne Purcell Homegoing services to celebrate the life of Deacon Wayne Purcell Brookins of Tampa, who died Sept. 27, 2012, will be held Saturday, Oct. 6th, 11 am at First Union Missionary Baptist Church, 3707 E. Chelsea Street. Interment in Orange Hill Cemetery. Born July 10, 1944 to Verdell & Mary Elizabeth Jackson Brookins, he was preceded in death by both. Wayne graduated from Howard Senior High School, Ocala, class of 1962, after graduation attended Florida Memorial College in St. Augustine. He received a BA degree in English Literature. While in college he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity-Kappa Gamma Chapter and later in life became a member of the grad chapter Pi Iota, Tampa. On college graduation day he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and shortly after was discharged because of a lifelong battle with asthma. Wayne taught high school English for over 3 years at Marshall High School, Plant City & East Bay High School, Gibsonton, before beginning a 30 year plus career with the City of Tampa. Until his death, was a faithful member of First Union Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, Chairman of the Trustee Board and member of the Finance Team, Male Chorus & Deacon in charge of the Culinary Ministry. He leaves to cherish his precious memories a loving & devoted wife of 16 years, Kathryn Brookins; 2 daughters, LaBarbara Michelle Pope (Wendell) Tampa, Carol Jenkins (Michael) Tampa; 3 sons, Daryl Brookins (Denena), William Bryant, Rev. Adrian Gay (Dyeronda) of Tampa; a host of other family & friends. Remains will repose 5-7 pm, Friday, Oct. 5, at First Union Missionary Baptist Church, family will receive friends 6-7 pm.
