Frieda M. Parry

Parry, Frieda M.
Frieda Mary Vera Parry died on March 5, 2014 in Napa, CA, surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness. Frieda was born to William Frost and Emily Curtis on August 26, 1917 in the small village of Osmaston, in Derbyshire County, England. William was a gardener at Yeldersley Hall, outside of Ashbourne, and Frieda along with her brother Dudley, born in 1919, grew up in one of the Hall's cottages. Frieda excelled in school and was educated at Ashbourne Pupil Teachers' Centre and Hockerill College, going on to teach at Pursglove School in Tideswell and Spondon House School in Derby. It was at the Pupil Teachers' Centre where she met Frank Parry, a brilliant mathematician and aeronautical engineer. Frank and Frieda married on February 22, 1941. They waited until the end of World War II to start a family with son Michael born in 1945 followed by son Stephen born in 1949. By then Frank had joined the aircraft engineering team at Rolls Royce and Frieda was devoted to providing the very best upbringing for her two sons including making sure they had three nutritious meals daily with no snacks in between and taking deep breaths on the front steps and Zubes lozenges before running for the school bus.
In 1957, Frank got an offer he could not refuse and moved the family to America to join the staff of Solar Aircraft in San Diego. Frieda reluctantly left friends and family behind but developed the most wonderful ability to remain close to all through letters and cards, a practice she continued well into her 90's. Frank's job changes moved the family to Massachusetts in 1963, to Loma Linda, CA in 1965 and then in 1972 to Westlake Village outside of Thousand Oaks, CA where she lived until moving to Napa in 2006. After Frank died in 1984, Frieda surprised all, perhaps even herself, by how well she coped with widowhood, including learning to drive at age 67.
Frieda and Frank were active members of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Thousand Oaks. Frieda was the Directress of the Altar Guild for many years. Frieda enjoyed cooking - her Christmas cake, mince pies and sausage rolls were legendary - gardening, bridge, bowling, public television, writing in her diaries and corresponding with family and friends. She was a proper English lady and Mum.
She is survived by her two sons, Michael Parry, M.D. and his wife Patricia, of Stamford, CT, and Stephen Parry and his wife Susan, of St. Helena, CA; and Michael's family: granddaughter Andrea Sholes, husband Chris and great granddaughter Kyra, of Largo, FL; granddaughter Kerry Labadia and husband Patrick of Boston, MA; step-grandchildren Christian Bill of Stamford, and Amy Kutney, husband Chad and family of New Jersey. Frieda was predeceased by her step-grandson, Navy SEAL Brian R. Bill in 2011.
Services were private. Burial will be next to Frank in Hognaston Churchyard in England. Memorial gifts are appreciated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: or The Little Warriors A Brian Bill Project:
