Mountain, John E.
John E. Mountain passed away on May 19, 2013. John was born in Corry, PA to Maxine Anna (Durham) Mountain and Erwin C. Mountain. He graduated from Corry Area High School and also SUNY Brockport. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the US Air Force in the field of electronics. When entering the Air Force he joined with three very good buddies and they have remained good friends over all the years, Rich Koslow, Paul Dwyer and Charlie Tanner. The three buddies joined in Pittsburgh, PA and went on to Lackland AFB, TX and Kessler AFB, MS. John spent considerable time in Japan which he loves to reminisce about.
After leaving the Air Force, John joined IBM in Rochester, NY and transferred to Erie, PA, Washington DC, Boston, MA and White Plains, NY. John retired from IBM after twenty eight years and then joined the Rolm Company in Norwalk, CT. After leaving Rolm, he wasn't ready to retire and decided to open a restaurant, Ranch 1, in Stamford Town Center, which he and a partner operated for three years before selling the business. John had many interests; he enjoyed sailing, tennis, sports, books and music. In recent years John enjoyed teaching and mentoring students at Literacy Volunteers in Stamford. John and his wife, Barbara also enjoyed socializing puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
John was a member of the Elks Lodge in Stamford #899, National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion Post 0200.
John is survived by his wife Barbara, three sisters-in-law; Patty and her husband Dick Runnels of Meadville, PA, Clara Peplinski of Cary, NC and Jo and her husband Larry Brickman of Canfield, OH. John is also survived by a dear cousin Geraldine Armstrong of Staten Island, NY and several other cousins and by several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT is honored to assist the Mountain family with the arrangements.
