Joseph A. Zang Jr., 87, of Greenwich passed away at his home on November 29, 2013 after having a wonderful Thanksgiving with his family. Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 26, 1926 to Joseph Albert Zang and Margaret Louis Zang, he spent his childhood in Rockville Center, NY. After high School, Joe served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II from1942 to 1946 and returned to service for the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Between his years of active duty, Joe graduated in 1950 from Princeton University, where he participated in the marching band and was a member of the Princeton Campus Club. He spent his career at AMF in Stamford from 1950 to 1985, where he served as Director of Chemical Engineering. Joe held 5 U.S. patents in his field and was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the Princeton Engineering Association, the American Society of Bakery Engineers, the Appalachian Trail Conference, and the U.S. Chess Federation. He was also a member of the Third Order of the American Congregation of Franciscans. On November 13, 1965, Joe married Mabel Joy Bell. Together, they belonged to St. Saviour's Church in Old Greenwich, where Joe served on the Vestry for 25 years. They were long-time members of Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club, and he was also an avid cyclist and kayaker. Joe is survived by his wife, Joy, his children, Claire Zang of Greenwich and Catherine Zang Cunningham of Southport, his son-in-law Bob Cunningham, his two granddaughters, Quinn and Eden Cunningham, his cousins, and many nephews and nieces. Over the past few years, Joe was assisted by his caregivers Vicki, Dominga, and Angelina to whom his family expresses their sincere appreciation. Burial will take place on Tuesday, December 3 at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, CT at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Saviour's church in Old Greenwich, CT.
