Matilda C. Raus "Tilly", passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2014.She was born in Stamford on September 9, 1924 to the late Antonio and Pasqualina (Riccardelli) Conte.
She is survived by her son Dr. John Raus and his wife Joanne, and their children Alicia and John, her son Robert Raus and his wife Noreen, and their children Amanda and Ashley, her daughter Maria Politica and her husband Steven , and their children Kathleen and Elyse and her sister Ida Saunders.
Besides her parents, Matilda was predeceased by her husband John, her son Donald and her sisters Rose Lopiano, Mary Conte and her brother Michael Conte.
She instilled in her children a love of God, children and animals. She will be remembered for her devotion to her children and grandchildren, her fabulous Italian cooking (including her famous homemade ravioli), her spotlessly clean home, her feeding of any and all stray/homeless animals, including a wayward skunk. Matilda had a life-long dream of winning the lottery and setting up a huge animal shelter with free veterinary services for the public. Sadly, that dream did not come to fruition. In support of Matilda's desire to help animals, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the following: for dog lovers: Sarah Rescue, P.O Box 707, Stratford, CT 06615, for cat lovers: Cat Coalition, Inc., 65 Longbranch Avenue, Stratford, CT 06615, cat and dog lovers: PAWS, 504 Main Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06851.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Clement's Church, 535 Fairfield Avenue, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Darien. There will be no calling hours.
