William FitzMaurice Iii

FitzMaurice, III, William H.
William Henry FitzMaurice, III, 89, died peacefully October 15, 2013 at Pomperaug Woods, Southbury, Connecticut. Born and raised in Stamford, Billy was the son of William, Jr. and Anna (Kinsley) FitzMaurice. Billy married Marie (Mimi) Rich in 1952. They lived and raised their family in Stamford until moving to Southbury sixteen years ago. Billy graduated from Stamford High School, and attended St. Thomas Seminary and Columbia University. Billy was a veteran of World War II. Although Billy did not often speak about the war, we know that he received numerous commendations and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant 3, serving with the 96th Signal Battalion primarily in Burma. While Billy studied to enter the priesthood, he eventually chose instead to enter the business world. He spent the majority of his career in the menswear industry. He held various executive and senior marketing positions at several of the menswear publishers and trade associations, including Hare Publications, Bobbin Publications, Menswear Retailers of America (MRA), National Outer Wear Sportswear Association (NOSA) and the World Congress of Menswear. Billy is best known for his big smile and quick quips, his dapper clothes, a flower in his lapel and, in later years, his debonair ascot. He was an avid tennis player and was a member of the Stamford Yacht Club for over 64 years. A devout Catholic, Billy was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Stamford and Sacred Heart Church, Southbury. He was also a dedicated volunteer at The Covenant House in New York City from its inception until he retired. A wonderful father, grandfather and devoted husband of 56 years, Billy was predeceased by his wife Marie Rich FitzMaurice (Mimi); and survived by his children Michael (and his wife Ann), Thomas (and his wife Cindy); and Therese (Taffy)(and her husband Chris), and six grandchildren William, Anne, Megan, Kathryn, Margaret and Matthew. Billy was predeceased by his siblings Mary Anne, Kinsley and Richard and is survived by his brothers Daniel W. FitzMaurice of Stamford (and his wife Marie) and Robert M. FitzMaurice of Darien and his sister-in-law, Patricia Conway of Stamford. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. Consistent with his wishes, burial was private and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated on November 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Stamford, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Covenant House, c/o Sondra Latchman, 5 Penn Plaza, New York, New York 10001-1810. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury, CT
