Salvatore Buchetto Obituary

Buchetto, Salvatore R.
Salvatore Robert Buchetto lived, larger than life, from October 12, 1948 through October 15, 2014. For 39 years, he was an eccentric, electric force of nature in the Stamford Public Schools, beloved by classes and respected by peers, teaching science at Burdick and Cloonan Middle Schools. His performance in front of the blackboard was the stuff of legend, often extending out of the classroom to capture the imagination of students and fellow teachers. A Mad Scientist and Arm Wrestling Champion on the school stage, he was famous for memorable experiments that combined sports cars and mannequins; leaf-blowers and popsicle stick houses; a bed of nails and school principals; and rooftops and egg drops.
The son of Peter and Ann Buchetto, Sal was born in and grew up in Stamford. He graduated from Southern Connecticut University with a BS in Science, and followed that up by earning two Masters in education, one each from Southern Connecticut University and the University of Bridgeport. After retiring from Stamford schools, Sal would return to both his universities, schooling the next generation of teachers in his Graduate Education Classes. His marathon, free-form sessions left his audience on the edge of their seat - hesitant to take a bathroom break for fear of missing a single educational, entertaining word of his considerable experience and unique techniques.
He is survived by family who were ever amazed and energized by his vitality: his wife Toni, daughter Kamera Dukes and granddaughter Michaela Dukes; and good family friend Abraham Davis; Sal's sister Vita Chichester and her sons and their families: Dan, Jenn and Lucas; Keith, Tracy, Sammi and Lia; Peter, Jessica, Max, Nicole and Zack; nephew Mark Servidio and his family; sister in law Rita Orgera and her children: Ryan, Alexis and Kendall; sister-and-brother-in-law Aly and Dan McNamara, and their children and families: Tyler, Casey, Brian and Zoe; and Sara, Kyle and Cole; brother-in-law Bill Ruedaman; and sister-in-law Kim Orgera, her daughter Tessa and her children: Chance, Yancy and Dylan. Sal now joins his son Kris in heaven. Sal was also predeceased by his brother in law Daniel Chichester, Sr.; his sister Rachel and brother-in-law Babe Servidio; his brother Peter Buchetto; and brother in law Bo Orgera.
Devoted to a malfunctioning series of TR-6 autos, Sal single-handedly supported the used parts industry for that model over the years. An accomplished photographer, his "Photography by Salvatore" business captured the romance of hundreds of newly wedded couples. He supported Native American causes through his visits to state casinos, and was widely-read through his frequent contributions to the Stamford Advocate editorial page on a wide variety of serious and satirical topics. In tribute to Sal, it's rumored that big screen TVs across the state will be dimmed to half-brightness, and take-out cups of coffee will be served only half full. (It is expected that profits at County TV, Best Buy, Dunkin Donuts and Donut Delight will drop significantly.) Sal was a long time member of Grace Evangelical Church on Courtland Avenue, and loved Jesus.
There will be a visitation at Cloonan Middle School auditorium this Sunday, October 19th, from 2 to 4 PM. A memorial service will immediately follow from 4 to 5:15 PM, conducted by Pastor Scott Taylor. The family requests those attending to dress in festive red, white and blue.
Mr. Buchetto's dynamic, unmatchable influence lives on through the countless students whose lives he inspired over 4 decades. Sal measured out at 73 1/2 inches, and a bouncing 232 pounds, 9 ounces. To leave an online condolence please visit www.leopgallagherstamford.com

Sal was a good friend who I'll miss. I'll miss his great sense of humor and the ability to make me laugh, his honest conversations and all of the great memories of his silly antics! I'm so happy that our friendship spanned across the years and I have comfort in knowing we had a mutual admiration society. It's hard to believe he's gone but I know Sal's at peace. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and I'm proud to call Sal my good friend! My thoughts and prayers are with you Toni and Kami and Micaleh. Much love, Judy

Sal and I were classmates at SHS but rarely crossed paths there as he was an athlete and I, well not so much. We reconnected a few years back on Facebook and I was not at all surprised to learn that he had spent his career in education, for even way back when I could sense that he was a special guy with a real talent for connecting with people. He was gentle, kind and truly a good, good man. I am deeply sorry to learn of his death and hope that his family knows of the great love and affection countless people had for him....and by extension them. My world is a little less joyous today. May he rest in peace.

Dear Toni, Kamera & Family,
I just learned of Sal's death and words cannot express my deep sorrow.
I was able to stay connected with Sal through our joint work at the University of Bridgeport. Every conversation started out reminiscing about the crazy old days at Cloonan and progressed into Sal's latest business venture or adventure. To say he was a force of nature is an understatement.
Whether it was ripping phonebooks in half, throwing numerous objects out of windows, going to Board of Ed. Meetings in costume or seeing how many times he could get his name in print Sal was every principal's dream and nightmare rolled into one. Sal did not live life; he attacked life and made it interesting for those who were lucky enough to be in his wake.
He will be missed and I am deeply sorry about your loss

Although it has been many years since I've seen your family at Grace, I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. B's passing. I was also at the service for Christopher and my heart felt condolences to Toni, Kami, and family.

Prior to Youtube and Facebook, Mr. B would entertain us. He was the first person I know to make his pecs "dance."

Stamford won't be the same without Mr. B. He will be missed, and by the sheer number of people who showed Sun at the Cloonan service, he will live on in our memories.

Mr. Buchetto was my science teacher at Cloonan back in the very early '80s. Larger than life, always quick with a joke. I remember his science experiments as if they were just yesterday (rather than 34 years ago, yikes!). I always looked forward to science thanks to his unique ways of making science fun and real. My prayers and love to the Buchetto family. I know how difficult this must be but know that his legacy will live on through all of the lives he touched.

October 18, 2014

I remember when he came roaring into our classroom with a large steamy metal canister. Everyone in class was on the edge of their seats with anticipation. He opened the lid with fierce excitement and said "LIQUID NITROGEN!!!!" -- He proceeded to put on what appeared to be a chemical suit, but in reality was just rubber gloves and goggles. He dropped a regular old hotdog into the Liquid Nitrogen and then quickly pulled it out... frozen solid! He said "who wants to eat this!?"...and then threw it on the floor and it shattered like crystals.

Yeah, that's a cool teacher!

Thank you for setting the bar so high.

To Toni Orgera and Family
We were so saddened to read of Sal's passing. I still have taped to my refrigerator one of his famous Letters to the Editor, dated 2004. It was titled "Less Education" and read: I find it fascinating in 1964, most colleges required students to attend 191 days of classes. Now, 40 years later, with college costing almost eight times more, students average only 138 days of classes per year. Somehow, I find getting a lot less for more money to be an a skewed form of economics. Just one of Sal's "pearls of wisdom." Even my son who didn't attend public school in Stamford knew about Sal's famous Egg Challenge ... that's how well known Sal and his antics were around Stamford.
With our condolences.

I was fortunate to have been a student in Mr. Buchetto's 8th grade science class at Cloonan MS. I remember that everyone at Cloonan wanted to have him as their teacher. I remember looking forward to going to his class. I too remember the egg drop and as well the charismatic way in which he taught his classes. Mr. Buchetto succeeded in touching the lives of so many students. He had a wonderful impact on so many kids. May he be at peace and may his family always know how much he gave to all those he taught.

Mr. Buchetto was my homeroom and science teacher for both 7th and 8th Grades. I will always remember his engaging methods of teaching, and his amazing ways of making science fun for all. I will never forget his egg drop contests, his arm wrestling matches, and his phone book rippings. He would walk down the hallway and you would move out of his way, but have no fear for what a sweet gentle giant he was. I will miss him, but his impact and legagy will forever live on in our hearts. So glad he is finally reunited with his son Kris. My condolences to his family during this difficult time!

I appreciate the biographer who captured for us in his article in The Stamford Advocate the spirit of the eclectic personality of Sal Buchetto.
Sal was the educator who transcended timely trends. A master teacher of crafted ingenuity who infused his teaching with humor, action and love, revealed difficult scientific concepts, and principles that will live long in students' minds. I pray for heavenly eternity, filled with classrooms of "angels”. Diane Drugge

On my wedding day we had a nor'easter. It definitely was not the beautiful fall day we planned for and never got to take our wedding pictures at Bruce Park. There was rain, sleet and heavy winds that day and our pictures were pretty much ruined. Our photographer (Sal Buchetto) took the most amazing and beautiful pictures inside St. Mary's church and at Giovanni's that day capturing every moment and memory. He cracked jokes making us all laugh rather than be upset at Mother Nature. In hindsight, the terrible weather very well could have ruined our day but never did because of Sal. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sal and his family during this difficult time. He was an amazing and talented man in many ways and will be missed by many.
