Antonio (Tony) Nino Califano, 63, passed away with his family by his side on January 5, 2013. Born on May 19, 1949 to Maria Pacifico Califano and Giovanni Califano in Ponza Italy. Antonio is survived by his devoted wife Mimma (D'Arco) Califano; his children Maria Califano and John Califano of Stamford; his father Giovanni Califano of Stamford; his brother Biaggio (Benny) Califano and his wife Maria; his brother Silverio Califano; and his nephews Michael and Marco Califano. Tony was predeceased by his beloved mother, Maria Pacifico Califano. Tony came from Ponza, Italy with his parents in 1966 and settled in the Bronx. He worked at many restaurants before coming to Stamford in 1972, when he and his wife (Mimma) and brother Benny opened Stamford Restaurant and Pizza; the restaurant recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary. In 1994, Tony and Benny along with their wives (Mimma and Maria) also opened Belltown Pizza; both families are still operating these restaurants. Tony was a very generous man; he not only gave to his own community but to other less fortunate communities, as well. Tony made sure you never left his establishments hungry. Tony's passions included hunting with his brother, Benny; cooking for his family and friends; yearly vacations to Rhode Island; his Argentina hunting trip with his brother and friends, trips to Ponza, Italy with his family; and his dog Rusty. Tony celebrated life every day and will greatly be missed by his family and friends. Family and Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, CT 06902 on Monday, January 7th, 2013 from 3:00PM to 9:00PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 and process for a 10:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at the St Benedict -Our Lady of Montserrat RC Church, 21 Saint Benedict Circle Stamford, CT 06902.
