Wahl, Challice Randolph
Challice Randolph Wahl ("CR"), a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Atria in Darien. Born January 4th, 1909 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Homer and Leah Swart. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Frederick B. Wahl. She was 104.
Challice taught at Pittsford Central School, in Pittsford, NY for over 30 years. During that time she received numerous teaching awards. Upon moving to Darien, CT she continued to teach as a volunteer at Hindley Elementary School. She was also very active in the D.C.A. and a devoted member of the Christian Science Church in Darien. Challice loved gardening, creative arts, and playing bridge. Her greatest joy was spending time with children. She cherished her family as well as the loving staff at Atria that served as a second family. She was very upbeat, enjoyed having fun, and had a great sense of humor. Challice was always very positive, had a zest for life, and will always be remembered for the sparkle in her eye and iced coffee in her hand.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Heuer and her husband Alan, of Darien; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Heuer and his wife Lynn of Massachusetts; Kimberly Bandtel also of Massachusetts, Kristin Li and her husband Rhodemann of Darien, and Jonathan Heuer and his wife Chelsea of Switzerland; and ten great-grandchildren, Lauren, Annie, Sarah, Jack, Emma, Spencer, Nathaniel, Toby, Charlie, and Elizabeth. She is also survived by her sisters Gretchen Ann Osborne and Jean Elizabeth Robbie of California. She was predeceased by her sister Emma Louise Orose.
There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The First Church of Christ Scientists, P.O. Box 3435, Noroton, CT 06820.
