Charles J. Bakes, of Norwalk, CT, passed away of natural causes at the age of 93, on Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Aurora Senior Living facility. He was born September 17, 1919 in Grafton, MA to John C. Bakes and Mary (Karalemas) Bakes.
He worked for the US Post Office for 45 years. He was a WWII Army veteran, served as a US Army private first class, on the company F, 10th infantry, regiment 5th division from December 8, 1942 to December 10, 1945; serving in battles and campaigns in Normandy-Northern France, Rhineland Ardennes, under the command of General George S. Patton. He was honored and received five Purple Hearts and the Award of Combat Infantry Man Badge.
Charles is survived by his brother, Louis J. Bakes of Norwalk, CT; a sister in law, Eugenia Bakes and a nephew, John C. Bakes II of Wake Forest, NC. He was predeceased by his loving companion of over 30 years, Ahtenia (Tina) Sfakianos; a brother, George J. Bakes; a sister in law, Irene Perkowski Bakes. The family would like to give a special thanks for the compassion and care to the staff of Aurora Senior Living.
Family will receive relatives and friends at the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave in Stamford, CT on Tuesday April 23rd from 5pm-8pm, with a Trisagion service at 7pm. A funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 24th at 10am at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, in Stamford, CT. Rev. Dr. Harry Pappas will officiate. Interment will follow to the Woodland Cemetery in Stamford, CT.
