Dr. Dorothy Browne Shaffer passed away in Stamford, CT on April 3, 2013 after a long period of declining health.
Dr. Shaffer was born in Vienna in 1923, emigrated in 1938 to London, and arrived in the US in 1940. She was something of a math prodigy even as a child, and received a full scholarship to Bryn Mawr College from which she graduated in 1943. That same summer she married US Naval Ensign Lloyd Hamilton Shaffer, a research chemist, who passed away in Jan. 1978. She received her PhD from Radcliffe College in 1962, and was subsequently a Professor of Mathematics at Fairfield University for 30 years. Dr. Shaffer published numerous research papers in higher mathematics; her field of concentration was complex variables. In addition to her distinguished career, she led an active life and enjoyed skiing, hiking, contra dancing, swimming and mycology. She was a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Association of American University Women, the Connecticut Mycology Association and of St. Francis Church. Her companion of 20 years, architect Hugh McClellan of Greenwich, CT passed away in July 2002. Her younger brother Clement Browne pre-deceased her in Oct. 2012. She is survived by 3 daughters - Deborah Shaffer, Diana Shaffer, and Dorothy Tien Shaffer, and 3 grandchildren, Maya Shaffer Bogdanow, Nicholas Lloyd Tien, and James Shaffer Tien.
A funeral service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 503 Old Long Ridge Road in Stamford at noon on Monday April 8, followed by internment at Long Ridge Union Cemetery, Erskine Road, Stamford. To leave an online obituary please visit www.boutonreynoldsfuneralhome.com
