Merlino, Ernest A.
Ernest A. Merlino, devoted husband of Nancy A. Castagna Merlino passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Ernest, 81, born in the Bronx, NY, resided most of his young adult life in New Haven, CT. He attended local schools, graduated from Notre Dame High School and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sales and Marketing from Quinnipiac College. He served honorably in the US Army from August 1954 to May 1956. He worked for many years as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative at Schering Corporation in New Jersey and in 1971 was hired as Director of Managed Care for the Purdue Frederick Company, currently Purdue Pharma LLC. He was largely responsible for the development of Purdue Frederick's Medicare market world-wide and made numerous other contributions throughout his 35 years with the company. Upon his retirement in 2006 Ernest was Vice-President of Institutional Sales. Shortly after his retirement he was hired as an Adjunct Professor teaching Principles of management at Norwalk Community College. He looked upon this opportunity as an extension of what he enjoyed most doing at Purdue - "training, educating and working with people."
Aside from his work Ernest's personal life with family and friends best exemplifies him as a man dedicated to the well-being of his family and loyal to both family and friends. He was a man of humility; a man characterized by principles, unwavering beliefs; a man of integrity; of vision and with great determination; unrelenting in his quest for excellence.
