John Raymond O'Melia, 83
John Raymond O'Melia (Jack) died peacefully on Thursday, April 18th, 2013. He was 83.
Jack was the devoted husband of Eileen McHugh O'Melia for 62 years and the proud father of Maureen Case, Susan Jandorek, Jack O'Melia and Tom O'Melia. His eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild cherished their wonderful grandpa, and will miss his humor, generosity and wisdom.
Jack graduated from Bishop Loughlin School in Brooklyn, married Eileen McHugh in 1951, and served in the US Army Signal Corps from 1951-1953. Upon leaving the Army, he started with IBM in the mailroom while enrolling in Pace University, where he pursued his baccalaureate at night school, building his family at the same time.
His career at IBM gave him great pride and pleasure, and he rose quickly to CFO of the Service Bureau Corporation. After 20 years with IBM, his division was sold to Control Data and Jack and the family moved from Westbury, NY to Stamford Connecticut, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Jack enjoyed golf and his beloved men's club at the Italian Center. He was head of the golf team for many years, and cherished relationships with his many friends there.
Jack was a selfless man of integrity, wisdom and wit, and his loving wife, sisters, children, grandchildren and friends and colleagues will always celebrate his legacy and remember his wonderful smile.
Friends and family will celebrate his life at a funeral mass, Wednesday April 24 at 10 AM at St. Bridget of Ireland Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford CT.
The family encourages anyone who knew Jack or his family to attend a reception to celebrate his life at The Italian Center of Stamford, 1620 Newfield Ave, Stamford CT Wednesday April 24 at 1 PM.
Jack was the loving caretaker of his wife Eileen during her battle with Alzheimer's. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name will be accepted by the Alzheimer's Drug Discover Fund. Donations can be made at or sent to:
Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation 57 West 57th Street, Suite 904 New York
