Dorothy Rita Dowling of Stamford, Connecticut died at home on March 6, 2014. She was 69 years old.
Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 4, 1944 to Leonard and Dorothy Dowling, both deceased. She had two siblings, Matthew, a brother, currently residing in Tennessee, and a sister, Mildred, now deceased. She is also survived by her beloved nieces, Georgette and Charlotte and nephew, George and their children, and Georgette's spouse Eileen, Dorothy's special friend.
Dorothy was married on June 14, 1980 to James O'Neill, and they have resided in the Glenbrook section of Stamford for many years. They had no children, but adopted many dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. Jim continues to reside at the family home with Schaefer the dog and Bobby the cat.
Dorothy graduated from Montclair State College in N.J. in 1966 with a B.A. in Social Studies. Through further study she acquired a good number of professional honors and certificates. Most of her working life was spent in the communications industry including management positions at Verizon, N.J. Bell, and AT&T in their marketing departments. In 1990, she started her own consulting firm, DRD Associates, and worked with many of the nation's leading companies.
Dorothy was a woman of many interests. She loved to read, especially mysteries. She had a great affinity for Manhattan, and visited frequently, attending plays, concerts and museums. Movies were a passion. Dorothy was an inveterate traveller, and had visited many places in the U.S. and Europe. She had a particular fondness for Italy and Ireland, where she made several visits.
Outside marriage and work, Dorothy's greatest interest was animal welfare. In addition to caring for her own many pets, Dorothy worked with animal shelters and animal rescue groups. Dorothy was actively involved in politics and worked on campaigns for several democratic candidates.
Dorothy enjoyed painting and writing, designed and made her own clothing, and was a gourmet cook. She had many friends, who marveled at her wit and charm. She was a loyal and helpful companion. We will all miss her.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Sunday, March 9, 2014 and Monday March 10, 2014 from 4 to 8 pm at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St Stamford, CT 06905.
