Joseph Pierni, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY. He was born in San Mango, sul Calore, Provence of Avellino, Italy on February 10, 1923 to the late Gerald and Concetta Prizio Pierni.
Joseph left his hometown of San Mango sul Calore in his late twenties first moving to Canada where he worked for a few years before immigrating to the United States. In December of 1953, he married his late wife Mary Uva and they began a family in what would become his life long home in Stamford CT. His early career in Stamford was as a mason and a landscaper. He became a successful general contractor and developer founding Soundview Construction, which eventually became Joe Pierni & Sons Construction. He planned, built, and developed many condominiums and single family homes in the various neighborhoods of Stamford.
Upon retirement he could be found at his home in North Stamford, maintaining a sizeable garden, making wine, jarring tomatoes, cooking, and tending to his pool. His home, like himself became the center of many family celebrations. His zest for life and passion was strongest for the love and pride he expressed for his family. His outsized heart and personality will be missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his children Diane DiNapoli and her husband Michael DiNapoli Sr., Joseph Pierni Jr., Camille Smuniewski, Gerald Pierni and his husband Dominick Principe, and grandchildren Lisa-Marie Pierni Wells and her husband Frank Wells, Michael DiNapoli Jr., Christopher DiNapoli, Mary Smuniewski, Joseph DiNapoli, Christine Smuniewski, and great-grandchildren Nicolina Grace Wells, and John-Joseph Robert Wells. He is pre deceased by his wife Mary Uva Pierni, siblings Marianna Pierni, Marino Pierni, and Carmine Pierni, daughter-in-law Nicolina Pierni, son-in-law John Smuniewski, and grandson Robert Smuniewski.
A funeral procession will be leaving The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford at 8:40 AM on Friday, April 25, 2014 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 AM at St. Leo's Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. Entombment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joseph's honor in memory of his beloved grandson Robert. Donations can be made to The Robert Smuniewski Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of JBHS (Joel Barlow High School), with Robert's name in the memo, Attn: Debi Farrell, 100 Blackrock Turnpike, Redding, CT 06896.
