Joseph George Gostomski, Jr., 91, of Stamford, passed away on Monday May 12, 2014 and will be sorely missed by family and friends. Joseph was born in Stamford on August 26, 1922 to the late Rose and Joseph Gostomski, Sr.
After graduating with the Class of 1940 from Stamford High School, Joseph served from 1941-1944 in the United States Army Medical Corp assigned to the 4th Air Force. He was honorably discharged as Medical Sergeant. Joseph Gostomski was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 58 years where he served as Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator as a member of the 4th Degree Honor Guard, and a lifetime member of the 3rd Degree Knights. On August 15, 1995, he was honored by Proclamation by the City of Stamford and the State of Connecticut for outstanding service to the community. In addition to volunteering at St. Camillus Care and Rehabilitation Center in Stamford, Connecticut, he served as past president of Saint Mary's Church Seniors, and was an honorary member of Holy Name Athletic Club. Also, Joseph served as Financial Secretary for the Conde Nast Maintenance Union where he was employed. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Stamford Post Office Credit Union. Joseph worked at the Stamford Post Office for 23 years before his retirement. After retiring, he was employed in the mailroom by Olin Corporation.
His grandfather, George Gostomski, used a penknife and carved the crucifix, situated in a hallway of the Holy Name Church, for the Reverend Monsignor Francis Wladosz. The cross was delivered to the Holy Name Church by a horse drawn wagon in the 1920's. The cross can still be viewed in the church today.
Joseph is survived by his two sons, Barry and Michael and a daughter, Betty Bernstein; six grandchildren, Lori, Julia, Jason, Erica, Heather and Matthew and a sister, Gloria Kupidlowski.
Besides his parents, Joseph is predeceased by his loving wife Janet Miller Gostomski and his brother, Eugene.
A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Saturday May 17, 2014 at 8:30AM and proceed to St. Mary's RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00AM. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace RC Cemetery, Rock Rimmon Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday May 16, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary's RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT 06902.
