At the age of 80, when Welcome Wagon was dissolved and she was forced into retirement, she joined Tina Blount to start the Town Greeters. The New Canaan Newcomers Club was started by Marnee in 1957. She had been an active board member until a few years ago. Many will remember her by her inspirational quotes in the Newcomers newsletters. A scrapbook of her work with Welcome Wagon and the Newcomers Club has been donated to the Historical Society. Along with traveling and volunteering, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and collecting. She was a faithful correspondent, keeping in touch with family and friends through cards, letters and phone calls. As a young woman, Marnee played softball, basketball, and badminton. In her middle years she was a swimmer and golfer. In her later years, she walked and swam daily at the YMCA. Her loving son Bruce helped her through many of the transitions of aging. He would wheel her in a wheelchair through downtown New Canaan to get some fresh air, drive around to see all the changes in New Canaan, and take trips to Compo Beach to enjoy the ocean breezes. She also enjoyed watching the many birds and critters that came to her charming back courtyard. To her many great grandchildren, this became known as Nana's backyard.
