MARJORIE GAGE RAYMOND, died Saturday June 14, 2008 at home. Born on December 22, 1918 in Norwalk, CT, she was the daughter of Chester and Catherine Dougherty Gage. She grew up on a farm in Norwalk and as a youth remembered riding her horse Go Girl everyday. After graduating from Norwalk High School in 1937, Marnee attended Katherine Gibbs school and then worked at Crofut Knapp Hat factory as a secretary. In 1941 she married Carlton S. (Pete) Raymond and moved to New Canaan. Although she has lived in New Canaan for the past 70 years, she loved to travel and enjoyed annual trips to Florida and California along with trips to Alaska, Bermuda, Australia, Ireland, Hawaii and a cross country car trip. For over 42 years, Marnee was the Welcome Wagon hostess for New Canaan. At the age of 80, when Welcome Wagon was dissolved and she was forced into retirement, she joined Tina Blount to start the Town Greeters. The New Canaan Newcomers Club was started by Marnee in 1957. She had been an active board member until a few years ago. Many will remember her by her inspirational quotes in the Newcomers newsletters. A scrapbook of her work with Welcome Wagon and the Newcomers Club has been donated to the Historical Society. After looking through this history, she may have been the most photographed person in the New Canaan Advertiser. Service was Marnee's gift to the world. She attended the New Canaan Methodist Church until joining the North Stamford Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed Sabbath services there for the past 30 years. Tuesdays at the Thrift Shop was on her calendar for over 40 years. She also volunteered at Waveny Care Center, serving tea to the residents and helping at meal times. The American Red Cross, New Canaan Cares, and the New Canaan YMCA have all recognized her for her years of service. Along with traveling and volunteering, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and collecting. She was a faithful correspondent, keeping in touch with family and friends through cards, letters and phone calls. As a young woman, Marnee played softball, basketball, and badminton. In her middle years she was a swimmer and golfer. In her later years, she walked and swam daily at the YMCA. Her loving son Bruce helped her through many of the transitions of aging. He would wheel her in a wheelchair through downtown New Canaan to get some fresh air, drive around to see all the changes in New Canaan, and take trips to Compo Beach to enjoy the ocean breezes. She also enjoyed watching the many birds and critters that came to her charming back courtyard. To her many great grandchildren, this became known as Nana's backyard. Marnee will be remembered by her 5 children; Carlton (Skip) Raymond 3rd of Windham, VT, Patricia Payne of Naples, FL, Penelope King of Harrisville, NH, Gregory Raymond of Peterborough, NH, and Bruce Raymond of New Canaan, CT, as well as 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.
