Netta Stern Obituary

NETTA (KRIPKE) STERN, born January 28, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away at home in Stamford, CT on March 30, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She showed great courage, selflessness and impish good humor to the last days of her five-year struggle with ovarian cancer. Daughter of the late Dorothy Karp Kripke, she is survived by her cherished husband, Yossi Stern (Stamford); son, Gil (Brookfield); and daughter, Tamar (Trumbull); her beloved father, Rabbi Myer Kripke (Omaha, Neb.); siblings, Saul and Madeline (both of NY, NY); and many treasured cousins and friends. Netta was a graduate of the University of Chicago (1971) and Columbia University, where she got a Master's Degree in Social Work (2000). She was a psychotherapist with the Connecticut Jewish Family Services for eleven years. Netta was a true mensch who loved music and language, and had unique gifts for teaching and making people feel good about themselves. A gathering in her memory will be held on Friday, April 1 at 10:30 AM at Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford, followed by interment at the Agudath Sholom Cemetery. Shiva arrangements will be announced at a later date.

I recently learned of Rabbi Kripke's passing, which got me thinking about Netta. We had lost touch since the last time we met at her daughter Tamar's bat mitzvah. I googled Netta and was stunned by the news that she's been gone for over 3 years! I spent many wonderful times with Netta during our Central High School years, at her family's home in Omaha. Later we became roommates at the University of Chicago. I can still hear her hearty, throaty laugh. May her memory be a blessing to her family and friends.

I just read in the Central High Foundation publication about Netta's passing. As I read her obituary, I knew she had never changed since I knew her as a classmate at Dundee Elementary School. I remember her and her family as kind, gentle, accepting and loving. I often think of Netta when I see a show of kindness and generosity. I am very sad to hear about leaving us way to early. My love goes out to her and her family.

Netta welcomed me when I moved from South Dakota to Omaha in our sophomore year at Central High. I have cherished her kindness and brilliance since 1964, and carry her in my heart. My condolences.

Being a fellow Central High graduate, I was looking over the information on our upcoming 45th reunion, when I noticed Netta's name in memoriam. I was shcoked and terribly saddened to learn than my kindergarden girlfriend had passed away.

From Dundee elementary I had know Netta and have always had a very special place in my heart for her...she was my first kiss...and I don't think I could have picked anyone in the world better to share it with.

My heart goes out to all her friends and family... you are so lucky to have had her, it's shame it ended so soon.

I knew Netta Stern in a professional way for more than seven years, although I like to think of her as my true confidant and friend. I came to Netta as single mother seeking guidance at JFS with some issues I was having with my family. Through that relationship -she uplifted my spirits and gave me the strength to move forward with my life despite my tribulations -which led me to focus on my educational goals. With Netta’s help I was able to graduate college with both a bachelors & master’s in psychology, and enroll in a doctorate program to one day help people like she helped me.
My only wish is to impart the same amount of respect, honesty, warmth, and sensitivity to my patients- the way Netta conveyed personal warmth and concern for me and my well-being. She was an amazing clinician because she realized therapy was a collaborative effort, (between therapist and client) and because her understanding of people went beyond technique and theory. We grew in understanding of each other when we talked about our own struggles and limitations, helping our clients, and how humans tend to struggle with basic issues on a continuum. I wish to express my deepest condolences to the stern family. She will always be thought of and be an inspiration in my life!

I have just discovered this guest book and read the moving entries that others have left. Netta was my sister-in-law and became a dear friend. She was hospitable and kind. She always sounded so calm and "together": including the times we spoke on the phone not long before she died. She lived life to the fullest throughout the illness she coped with so bravely and clear-sightedly and with humor. She was a lovely, loving person and an inspiration.

Sad to hear about Netta. She's one of the people I wish I had known as an adult. We grew up together in Omaha and I learned to love peanuts and M and M's at birthday parties in her basement. How could a child of Rabbi and Dorothy Kripke not turn out to be a sweet and wonderful person?

My mother was the most beautiful person I've ever known. No matter the circumstances she was kind and gentle. She loved her family more than anything in this world. Mommy, I love you more with every breath I take and no matter what I will always carry you with me. Your body may be gone but your soul will live forever in everyone you've ever touched. Rest in peace.

I am so very sorry to learn about Netta's passing.

Although I did not personally know Netta, yet, the entire Kripke family has been God's special gift.

Rabbi Kripke, our condolences go especially to you, to perhaps in all your wisdom, might understand the 'why' of this loss.

May God continue to watch over Netta and her loved ones from Heaven above, and may she be welcomed into Heaven by her loving mother.

God Bless Netta, her families, her loved ones, and even from us who have never had the pleasure to know her.

May she suffer no more.

Having grown up in Omaha, with Rabbi Kripke as my rabbi and Netta as one of my favorite babysitters, I think of her every time I hear that favorite bedtime lullaby, "There's a hole in my bucket..."

Netta was my biology lab partner at Central High, back in 1964. I never forgot how nice and funny and creative she was. The world is a better place for her having lived in it.
