VINCENT JOHN RELLA, 69, of Danbury passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Danbury Hospital. Vinny was a longtime resident of Stamford, CT prior to moving to Danbury. Born April 29, 1942 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Onofrio and Maria Pallazo Rella. Vinny served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Independence while on active duty with the US Navy from 1961-1966, where his ship was part of the Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade. Following the Navy, Vincent pursued a career in the insurance industry. He worked for 17 years with the Prudential Insurance Company prior to becoming an independent insurance consultant. He was an avid bowler and Yankee fan. He leaves behind his beloved wife Frances Smeriglio Rella of Danbury; his two sons, Victor Rella and his wife Tina of Stamford, Raymond Rella and his wife Tammy of Cromwell, CT; his daughter Cheryl Lynn Payne of Watertown, CT; two stepsons, Frank Smeriglio and his wife Marilyn of Wesley Chapel, FL, Mark Smeriglio and his wife Debbie of Norwalk, CT; two brothers, John Rella and his wife Pat of White Plains, NY, Charles Rella of Harriman, NY; three sisters, Elizabeth Mirra of Yonkers, NY , Lucy Rella of Ocala, FL, Joanne Brooks and her husband Bob of Amherst, MA; 11 grandchildren, Colin, Aidan, Eileen and Bridget Rella, Dylan Payne, Rylee and Analisa Smeriglio, Andres Osorio, Jenna, Sara, and Alyssa Smeriglio; along with nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife Francine Rayburn. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother James Rella, brother-in-law Frank Ponico, brother-in-law Ken Mirra, and nephew Gary Ponico. A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 10:00AM to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia's Church, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace R.C. Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford, CT. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00pm.
