Martha Leovy Cullison, a long-time Fairfield county resident and a charter member of the Junior League of Greenwich, died last week in Valley Cottage, New York, where she had lived for the past 24 years. She was 79.
Ms. Cullison was born to American parents in Lima, Peru, where her father, George Leovy, worked in shipping and port development for W.R. Grace & Co.. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was 8 years old and she spent most of her childhood in Greenwich, where she attended Greenwich public schools and the Greenwich Academy before graduating from the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Ms. Cullison was an avid painter and verse maker in her younger years, and her interest in composing children's books she largely put aside as she devoted herself to bringing up her three children. She received an Associates Degree from Pine Manor Junior College and studied art at the Columbia School of General Studies and the Art Students League In New York. Her first marriage to the late George Bennett Cullison, Jr. ended in divorce, and for the past 24 years she lived happily with and was cared for by her long-time companion and family friend, Geoffrey Quenet. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Florence Leovy and her sister, Lucille Davenport. She is survived by Mr. Quenet, of Valley Cottage, New York; her sister, Adair Hatchl of Rowayton, CT; three children, Katharine Cullison of New York, N.Y., Bennett Cullison of Santa Rosa, CA, and Alan Cullison of Moscow, Russia and four grandchildren.
