Gambino, Joseph L.
Joseph Leonard Gambino, beloved husband of Muffy, father of Laura Croft (and Daniel), Kathy Gambino (and Jude Sanchez), Mark Joseph Gambino (deceased), J. Todd Gambino (and Darunee), grandfather of Danielle, Jimmy, Nicole, Jennifer, Siena and JJ, passed away on December 15, 2012. He fought valiantly against brain cancer for the last two and ½ years and died peacefully at home. Joseph was predeceased in 2011 by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Beth) Gambino. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Frank Giuliano and Margaret and John Joyce, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Joe was a Stamford native, and except for college and a brief period afterwards, lived and worked here his entire life. He was born on April 4, 1935 to the late Rose Marie ( Piacenza ) Gambino and Carmine Gambino. Joe graduated from Stamford High School in 1953 and was the first person in his family to attend college. He received a Civil Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1958 and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Joe was also an Eagle Scout and he lived his life according to the Boy Scout oath and law. The story goes that after graduation and working in Illinois and Georgia (where he met Beth), Joe's father and Lloyd Fowler gave him money to start his own business. The rest is history. The company that Joe founded and presided over for more than 35 years was named The Atlas Construction Company. All one needs to do is drive around town and look at Canterbury Green, Macy's, the old ICI building and all of Soundview Farms, to see the indelible mark that Joe made on his hometown. Later as an Owner's Representative, Joe was instrumental in overseeing the construction of Saxe Middle School and New Canaan High School . He was also a staunch supporter of many institutions in the Fairfield County area, namely The Ferguson Library, The Maritime Aquarium, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Connecticut Yankee Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Mere words are inadequate to sum up the measure of this man's life, but certain ones do come to mind: leadership, integrity and caring. Joe was a true leader in every sense of the word, not just of the company that he owned, but as the leader of his own family and in his community where he was a mentor to countless individuals. Joe never wavered in his belief about what was right and wrong. This belief was grounded in his strong Catholic faith and the value system that permeated his life and in the way he dealt with those around him. Joe loved his family and friends deeply and was always there for them no matter what they needed. Our lives will never be the same without him, but we are better people for having known and loved him. Calling Hours will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Leo P.
