Lucy Jefferies Obituary

Penzold Jefferies, Lucy
Lucy Singleton Penzold Jefferies passed away on November 2, 2015 at the age of 99 in Stamford, CT where she had lived for eight years.
She was a beloved teacher in Norfolk Virginia, first at Meadowbrook Elementary School and then for several decades at Norfolk Academy, teaching both the third and fifth grade. Lucy was the youngest of five children born to John Leonard Singleton and Lucy Johnston Singleton, both originally of Roper, North Carolina, but living in Norfolk at the time of Lucy's birth in 1916. All of her siblings have predeceased her. She was a graduate of Hollins University and attended graduate school at Old Dominion University. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk and the American Association of University Women, and volunteered many years at the American Red Cross Blood Bank.
Lucy married E. Theodore (Teddy) Penzold, Jr. in 1942. He was a well-known figure in civic and sporting circles in Norfolk, and was known as a wit and raconteur, but she could more than hold her own. They were married for 28 years until he passed away in 1970. In 2000, Lucy married Dr. William McKendree (Bill) Jefferies when they were both in their 80's. They had dated in the 1930's while at university. She moved from Norfolk, where she had lived all her life, to be with him, first to Charlottesville, VA and later to St. Marys, GA. Once Dr. Jefferies passed away in 2007 Lucy moved to Stamford to be close to her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Boush Penzold Maarbjerg (husband John) of Stamford CT, her grandson, Martin Peder Maarbjerg (wife Lori), and two great granddaughters, Lucy and Clara Maarbjerg, all of Silver Spring, MD, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in Norfolk in 2016 at a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Hollins University at www.hollins.edu.
The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, in Stamford, CT. If you care to leave a condolence message online please visit the family guestbook on www.bosakfuneralhome.com.

Mary, I am very sorry for your loss. I really enjoyed getting to know your mother over the past few years. She was a true Southern Lady! She was not afraid to tell people what she thought, but with such a lovely southern accent, it always sounded nice! She was so lucky to have been able to spend her last 8 years here in Stamford, with you and John so close by to care for her.

At NORFOLK ACADEMY we all LOVED LUCY! She was one of the PANTHEON of teachers-along with-Jean Land , Va Price, Lue Sebren--who taught young teachers so much! She had a razor sharp wit and a heart of gold. I still quote her often-- I.e."Children are at their worst on school buses and in SUNDAY School rooms!" etc.
